Generation No. 1

1. GOTTHELF CARL2 WISCHOW (CARL1)1 was born 11 May 1816 in Duesterbeck, Pomerania, Prussia, now Orzecho, Poland1, and died 4 January 1894 in Zittau, Wisconsin, USA. He married HENRIETTA TANTAW Bef. 1843 in Pommern, Pruessen = Prussia2. She was born 15 July 1816 in Prussia, and died 20 June 1882 in Zittau, Wisconsin, USA.

Notes for GOTTHELF CARL WISCHOW:

"Son of Carl Wischow, born in Duesterbeck (from the church that kept the family birth records).

Gotthilf/Gotthelf was the superintendent of a large estate and his sons worked on the estate. Her received $1,000, his garden, a cow, chickens, all vegetables, 2 suits of clothes, 2 suits of underwear - everything was furnished. He was general manager and made the sales of produce.

He felt that he was settled and no personal advantage for him to go to American, but felt the children should go to make a better living for themselves, and if he did not take them they probably never would go. He decided to quit his position to take his family, leaving $200 for each of his two sons, who were then serving their three years in the Prussian army, with his brother as fare (? sponsor) to come to America. Those sons followed the family when they could.

In April 1867 he and his wife and six children went to American, embarking on the Steamer ATLANTIC. Two day trip to Liverpool, UK. Two days out of Liverpool they discovered a fire in the hold of the ship. Some of the crew poured water o the fire, but soon discovered it was seeping oil, which had spread over the bottom of the ship, and that was on fire, the water only spreading the fire. An old German [Prussian] butcher aboard the ship said "Men, do as I do." There were over a hundred barrels of sauerkraut onboard. He took an axe, chopped the tops off the barrels, took armfuls of sauerkraut, and packed it onto the flames, smothering the fire. One of the passengers jumped overboard thinking the ship would sink. They landed safely after a lot of excitement in Castle Gardens in New York.

Incidently, the ATLANTIC on her next trip sank on a reef near the American shores, leaving only the mast above water. The entire crew and all passengers were lost, except one man who lashed himself to the top part of the mast. He was taken off, revived and lived.

"Gotthilf was a shepherd before coming to the US. In 1867 he brought his family to America, settling in Winnebago County, Wisconsin, and acquired a farm on which he spent the rest of his days, He and his wife had nine children: Carl, Henrietta, William, Augusta, August, Wilhelmina, Herman, Bertha and Ferdinand. The only three now living are Henrietta, Herman and Ferdinand.

Notes for HENRIETTA TANTAW:

Henrietta Tantow's grandfather fought in the "Moorish Wars". He was taken captive and put into slavery for three years in North Africa, where they plowed the fields with humans hitched up to plows. After their day's work was done they were unharnessed and allowed to go to the woods and find themselves some food, living on berries and shrubbery. After three years, he escaped and went home to his mother, who didn't recognize or acknowledge him as her son, saying that he was dead, but a scar which she knew about, convinced her that he was her son.

History

After the 30-Years-War (1648) Pommern consisted of two areas:

Schwedish-Pommern in the West under Swedish rule and the Eastern area under the rule of the Brandenburg Electors.

After the defeat of Napoleon, Sweden in 1815 renounced all her claims to areas in Germany including Pommern. Pommern west of the Oder River was also called Vorpommern (Cis-Pomerania) while east of the Oder River Hinterpommern was called (Trans-Pomerania).

In 1938 areas from the former provinces of Westpreussen and Posen which were lost after WWI were added in an administrative reform. In 1945, Poland took all Pommern East of the Oder River (Hinterpommern) as well as the area around Stettin.

Hinter-Pommern was cleansed of its ethnic German population and given to Poland in 1945. The Western powers were silent on the ethnic cleansing. Stettin was renamed Szczecin.

3. KARL FRIEDRICH AUGUST3 WISCHOW (GOTTHELF CARL2, CARL1) was born 17 November 1850 in Maldewin, county of Regenwalde Prussia, now Germany, and died in Waupaca County, Wisconsin, USA. He married LOUISA HUEBNER 1880, daughter of JOHN HUEBNER and FREDA HOBACK.

Notes for KARL FRIEDRICH AUGUST WISCHOW:

"AUGUST WISCHOW. Practically every one of the fine farmsteads of Waupaca County

represents a tremendous amount of labor in its development and improvement. The making of a farm in this section of Wisconsin was a tremendous task compared with the developing of a tract of land in the prairie states. There all that was necessary was to break the Virgin sod and plant the crops, and in the course of two or three years the land was tamed and gave the appearance of a finished farm. Not so in Wisconsin. The clearing of the giant forests was only a preliminary.

After that the crops were planted among the stumps, and the stumps proved a vexatious difficulty in cultivation and harvesting for a number of years. The stumps were finally taken out, the rocks removed, and some ten or fifteen years and in many cases a much longer time intervened before the farm was really finished. One of these farms that represents so much labor on the part of an individual family is that owned and occupied, by the Wischow family in Larrabee Township, along rural route No. 2 out of Clintonville. Ist proprietor, and the man who did so much of the heavy work was the late August Wischow. His widow and his unmarried children still occupy the old homestead.

August Wischow was born in Prussia, Germany, November 17, 1850, a son of Gotthilf and Henrietta (Tantow) Wischow.

August Wischow received his education in Germany and was seventeen years of age when he came to America. He knew not a word of the English language and had to pick it up by experience and practice. He assisted his father on the farm and lived there until his marriage.

In 1880 he married Miss Louisa Huebner. Mrs. Wischow was born in Caledonia Township of Waupaca County, a daughter of John and Freda (Hoback) Huebner.

About the time of his marriage August Wischow bought 160 acres in section 20 of Larrabee Township. The chief improvement on the land was a small frame house. About an acre and a half of the forest had been cleared away. He sowed his first crop among the stumps on this clearing, and as soon as planting was done he began using the axe and the saw to clear off more of the land. That process was repeated every year for many successive seasons, and of the original 160 acres about 120 acres are now cleared and thoroughly tillable. For the first ten years August Wischow did his farming with a yoke of oxen. Comforts and conveniences were added gradually. The old house was finally remodeled into a comfortable home, and at the present time there is almost nothing to be desired in the way of buildings, implements, and all that makes up a first class country home. August Wischow continued farming there until his death.

He and his wife were the parents of thirteen children: Bertha, wife of John Jannusch, a farmer in section 30 of Larrabee Township; Adelheid, deceased; Ferdinand, a progressive young farmer, who manages the home place for his mother; August, who married Elizabeth Pietz; Lorraine; Hedwig, wife of Emil Kloehn of Caledonia Township; Carl; Arthur; George; Frank, deceased; Freda, wife of F. Mahn of Clintonville.; Gertrude, deceased; and Martin. The late August Wischow was a republican in politics. The family are all active members of the Lutheran Church.

I also have some other pictures of their family. I also have an older picture of August where he looks like he might be in his 50's. I have his birth certificate from Maldewin, Germany ( now Poland and the name of the town has changed just a bit). It is in the county of Regenwalde. Gotthilf was a shepherd before coming to the US and bringing his family. There is a site on the internet that has pictures of Maldewin.

I guess the town hasn't changed since before the war.

Children of KARL WISCHOW and LOUISA HUEBNER are:

i. LORENA LORRAINE4 WISCHOW, m. WERNER HOFFMANN, in Wisconsin.

Notes for LORENA LORRAINE WISCHOW:

"I'm not sure of your family's genetic traits, but in ours the Wischow genes show up very strongly with many of the women being large boned, round faced, deep set eyes, high cheekbones and sloping sharp noses. When I met Carol for the first time I couldn't get over how much she resembled me and my cousins. My great Uncle Martin used to tell me about his sisters. Their hair colors traveled the whole range. My grandmother was blonde, Gertrude had black hair, Hattie was redheaded, and the rest of the girls more brown.

My father's mother, Lorena, married Werner Hoffmann in Wisconsin and they had 5 children, three who are still living. My father was the youngest boy and moved to Arizona with his Uncle Martin, Lorena's youngest brother, and Aunt. They had taken my father to live with them when he was about 10 years old. Martin had 3 children, two girls and a boy. My cousin Dale Wischow lives in California. We are definitely

related through Gotthilf, my ggggrandfather. I would love to hear your stories. I have several that my great uncle Martin told me. I guess the men were giants and the whole town would stand and watch when the Wischow boys came into town to get supplies. Also, my gggrandfather August, was known for pulling a team and wagon out of the mud when oxen couldn't do it.

When her sister (Hilda nee Toms aka Trebilcock Johns) was killed, I was less than a year old. Mom to [took] me to Virginia with her to help her mother through a bad time. I took my first steps there. Notes for HILDA JOHANNA AUGUSTA ABEN:

Hilda's baptism certificate 18 Sep 1898, signed by a Johanna Aben and a Frederick Lang.

My Aunt Hilda Johanna Augusta(e) Aben Theel Le Blanc Harrell turned 101 on August 15th 1999. Here are some of her thoughts and memories compiled by her family:

"...I was born in Ecorse Township, Michigan, USA. My father was a farmer, and later was a janitor at Horger School, Lincoln Park, Michigan. My mother was a homemaker.

Some of my most memorable times we had together as a family were the get-togethers at Grandpa and Grandma Backus' house. The men would sit together and talk in the back yard and the women were in the house fixing food and cleaning up. Cousin Edna (Lange) and I would go outside and play....

One hot summer day my father bought straw hats for the boys for protection from the sun. When he caught them one day without their hats, my dad took each one and held him upside down in the rain barrel. The boys always wore their hats after that!

My grandparents on my mother's side were the Backhaus'. They were both born in Prussia. The original spelling was later changed to Backus by the children of Amelia, my aunt. My grandfather on my father's side was Ludwig Aben. Backus and Aben both resided in what was originally Ecorse Township.

Grandpa Backus built a brick house, which still stands on Englewood in what is now Allen Park. We visited Grandma and Grandpa Backus often, and always on August 3rd to celebrate Grandma's birthday. She was a nice old lady. I remember one time she cooked fat pork and potatoes for me before I walked home through the fields (two farms) in the dark.

One day one of the Backus' sons, August, was sitting on his front porch and shot Uncle Louie's (his brother) cow which was in its own yard.

I remember grandpa Aben had a beard. They lived on Sanctum Line (Pepper Road) where they farmed. Grandpa also grew apricot trees.

One of the first memories I can recall as a child, our family lived in a log cabin and paid $300.00 a year rent. Later our landlord built a 3 bedroom house on State Street, now Southfield Road. My parents farmed 50 acres. We kids would play Hide & Seek and Tag.

A memorable incident I remember from my childhood is when I sang "Everybody's Doing It" (a dance called the >'Turkey Trot"). I got a whipping from my dad!

The only pet I had as a child was Shep, a sheepdog.

Christmas was different when I was a child. We were poor. We didn't have a tree. My mother would fix a soup plate for each one with a banana, an orange and an apple, a few cream candies and a few chocolate drops. I got an undressed doll one year, a premium from the Union Tea Company, that my mother bought baking powder from.

My mother always roasted a goose for Christmas. She raised them herself.

We never went to the movies. I never bought a candy bar. The only >'trip" I had was to go to the market with my mother. We took the horse and buggy!

I remember my mother's cooking. Fred liked her chicken soup. My favorite was her potato pancakes.

In my neighborhood, all of the people were farmers. William Raupp was one of the few men who didn't drink, but everyone in the area knew that Mrs. Raupp did!

When I started school, I was about 7 years old. My favorite subjects were Spelling and Language. I didn't like History. I went to Strowig School.

My favorite teacher was Hattie La Belle Johnson. She was patient. She taught all 8 grades in one room.

I walked to school each day - a mile each way. I liked to play baseball. [photo of Hilds's 8th grade diploma from May 29, 1912].

My first date - My cousin, Joe Tuchelski, took me to the Rex Theatre when I was 16. We rode the Fort Street Car.

I remember as a teenager, I did housework until I was 18. Then I worked for Mrs. Kretchman, whose husband owned a bar.

Other than housework, I was a telephone operator once. I worked at the Main Office at Woodward Avenue and Fort Street. It was a long ride by street car back and forth. I sat at the switchboard, plugging in the numbers requested. I really liked that job!

Rudolph Theel was the brother of Mathilda Coll, who introduced him to me. He was a good-looking red head....

Samuel P. LeBlanc - Sam's brother, Joe, who was a school custodian, knew my father. He told my father there was an opening for a key operator in the telegraph office at the Michigan Central Depot in Detroit. The hours were 12 midnight to 8a.m. This is where Sam worked....

...We bought our first house, 12894 Omaha, Detroit, for abut $4000.00.

Our first car was a Chalmers touring car that Sam already owned. Later he bought a Dodge sedan. Our yearly outing was a drive to the beach for swimming and a family picnic....

As an adult, I enjoyed several hobbies and pastimes, including - card playing, Fishing, Bowling, Crocehting, Baking/Cooking and gardening.

For two years I was President of the Ladies Aid of Calvary Lutheran Church in Lincoln Park, Michigan."

After reading this, I remember my mom said her dad raised rabbits. She had goose with apple and raisin stuffing for Christmas. When she visited us for Christmas 1978, my husband Gary roasted a goose with apple and raisin stuffing for her. I also remember that my dad drove a trolley in Detroit for awhile in the 1940's.

Hi Katie:

Never heard of an Indian in the family although my father always said there

was French in the family somewhere.

I have not found any information on ship passenger lists. When I was in Salt Lake they told me that only people who went steerage were on those lists. I know that Ferdinand and family may have gone another class.

Emery Aben always told me that he had seen the Backhaus name in a cemetery in Oshkosh, Wi. Know Gerald Aben - our parents were very good friends and went to the same Church (Calvary Luth in Lincoln Park) I went to High School with his brother Larry. Louise and my mom were very close.

to "Christine" Vol 16 - Nov 1864 to Nov 1865 may have some information.

I did not have a Birth or Death Date for Bertha who died at sea - Thanks

I am in the Downriver Genealogy Society and work in our Library (volunteer)

every Thursday. They have a small book called "Statement of Applicant for

Aid from Volunteer Relief Fund". They have applications from a Catherine

Aben/Abear/Abar for the years June 13, 1864/Dec 2, 1864/June 1, 1865 for a

Louis Aben. He was in the 5th Calvary Regiment, Co H- enliste at Trenton, MI for support of Catherine Aben, Mary E. Aben and Franklin Aben. This was

applied for in Taylor, MI.

I never connected the name Aben to Abear. I have a couple who always

attended my families funerals named Jake and Eleanor Abear - Maybe they are connected..
